Minutes from our March 4, 2009 meeting

Deb Davies, Child Care Director from Newman YMCA, gave an overview of the after school child care program that the Y offers at Myron Francis. She explained that the program focuses on the kids being physically active, eating healthy snacks, along with having some constructive down time and playing games.

Principal’s Report
Release of student NECAP scores: The NECAP scores will be sent home this week. It was assumed that school wouldnxt get them until later in the year, but the scoring process was completed earlier and the reports have arrived at the school earlier than anticipated.

April 5-11th will be Reading Week at Francis. There are many events planned, such as a storyteller, Diane Edgecomb, telling rainforest stories, Family Reading Night at 6:45 on April 7th, Drop Everything And Read, where the whole school stops everything and lines up and reads all at once. Mrs. Leddy will send home a calendar for that week listing the various events.

There will be a performance of Polynesian dances tying in the week's theme of story telling.

School Store
Starting this Friday there will be a trial run of resuming the school store. There will be a cart with school supplies making its way through the school.

American Girl movie
There will be an anti-bullying after school event planned for grades 2-3. An American Girl movie was donated to the school that deals with the main character being bullied and how she learns to stop the bullying. (Date to be announced)
Rooster Games: On March 11, 5th graders, who have fulfilled their commitment of reading at least 7 of books from the RI Children's Book Nominees, will participate in the Rooster Games at Gordon School.

Mrs. Leddy discussed that the East Providence School Department is looking into privatizing the custodial work next year. The union president plans on attending an upcoming PTO meeting to identify some of the points of why he would like to keep the work within the school department.

Treasurers’ Report
Steph deAbreu reported on the monthxs budget. The request submitted by Mrs. McCarthy for book covers was approved from funds from the Excellence in Education.

Boys' Mad Science Event: The event is scheduled to start at 6.p.m. on 3/13 (rain date is 3/20). The evening will start with everyone having the opportunity to eat, and have a photo taken, by photographer Scott Sylvia, from 6-7:15. At 7:15, the Mad Scientist program will begin. It will be a 45 minute performance. At 8:00, the raffle drawings will begin.

Yankee Candle Spring Fundraiser: The school is trying a spring fundraiser this year. Order forms are due 3/6.

Promotion Commotion: Teachers and Mrs. Leddy will review packets and than they will be sent home for the 5th graders to complete. If parents have any school event pictures, that could be used for the Promotion Commotion Event or for the yearbook, please send them in to Diana Mederios or Michelle Rogers and they will be scanned and returned to you.
